I have always felt that doing a cleanse
People seem to think that only dread-headed hippies do them, which is partly true in this case but a bad vision of what cleansing means.
In my mind, buying synthetic products and chemicals for cleansing purposes is counterproductive. My idea of cleansing means removing unnatural products from your body and allowing your body to function more naturally.
Cleansing means using natural means to flush out unnatural substances.
Bad food choices, bad chemicals you’ve been around, and other toxins surrounding you are constantly affecting you.
If your digestion is off, it will make you feel off.
Your body’s a harmonious system and though it is adaptive, it can only handle so much.
Being able to clean it of the junk that you may have been filling it with feels great. It feels refreshing and we would suggest that everyone do them periodically.
What is my version of a good cleanse?
Well, first, I would say that it isn’t terribly strict, but is adhered to 100%.
It is better to set lower bars and hit them than to constantly not reach your goals and feel discouraged.
Second, it wouldn’t include and “miracle products,” or rather it uses nothing other than 100% natural and organic methods.
What do we do?
Increase Your Water Intake by Around 50%
Of course, we all know that drinking water is an important aspect of being healthy. We also know that a
We shouldn’t beat ourselves up, just continually get better at it.
Water assists your body in flushing out any unwanted substances, such as sodium or food in your digestive tract.
Sodium can cause your body to hold on to excess water weight, so increasing your intake of water will allow your body to release this excess water and consequently flush out the sodium.
It may not seem that we eat excess sodium, but it is actually insanely easy to over consume sodium, it’s literally in everything that we typically eat!
Increasing your water intake will also increase the amount of energy that you have. This will consequently assist you in many areas of your life.
I’m not saying that you start drinking more water and you can run a marathon.
If you do a cleanse and afterwards continue to drink only water, you will notice a definite difference in the way that you feel on a daily basis.
Drinking water assists literally every function in your body, down the the miniscule neurological functions that allow you to do anything.
The point of doing cleanses is to clean your body out of unnecessary substances.
That means the yucky stuff that’s stuck in your gut…
There are a lot of things that you can do to aid your digestion, but drinking water is the absolute king of digestive health.
This will help your cleanse by aiding your body in the removal of toxins through the colon, as well as removing and metabolizing toxins through other means.
Cut Processed Foods as Much as Possible
Cutting processed foods out of your diet is literally the entire point of this blog.
The change that we noticed after cutting out processed foods was so intense that we decided to dedicate our time to running a blog to spread the word.
There are a myriad of health issues associated with process foods, or just eating the typical American Diet.
The SAD Diet is high in;
- Herbicides and pesticides
There are a lot of other reasons, this is a topic we are always mentioning.
During your cleansing period, you ideally would completely cut out anything that isn’t 100% organic and natural.
Doing this for a couple weeks will allow your body to absorb the nutrients that it may have been missing out on. This will consequently allow your body to digest and metabolize substances your body does not want.
Your body knows what to do.
The issue comes when we constantly attack it with foods and substances that it does not want.
Eat mostly produce, and make sure that you get organic as often as you are able to.
There is a list of fruits and vegetables that are more important to try to get organic.
Cut Down Meat Consumption, Primarily Red Meat
If there is one thing that I try to avoid, it’s being “that vegan.”
I never try to convert people, but any reasonable person should be able to see that meat isn’t great for your body in excess.
This is especially true for red meat.
This has been proven again and again, we know that our bodies are not capable of consuming large amounts of red meats.
Yet, in America, we consume up to 3x’s the amount of the average citizens in other countries.
This can lead us to a variety of health complications, including:
High Blood Pressure
And obviously many, many others.
It isn’t a case for veganism, it’s a case for our general health.
All I’m suggesting is that as you go through a cleansing period go easy on the harsh meats, such as beef and pork.
If you must eat meat, stick to chicken and fish, and limit the overall amount that you ingest. Regardless of your diet, ingesting more vegetables is always a great idea for your health.
Eating red meats and other harsh products can also disturb your microbiome. This is a point that is coming up soon, but your microbiome is important to your overall health and wellbeing.
Eating fermented products for probiotics, and additionally other foods for prebiotics will ensure that your microbiome is thriving. This will aid your digestive tract and make sure that you are making the most of your cleanse.
Eating bad foods, however, will negatively affect your bodies ability to manage this bacterial system. Your body could become overrun with bad bacteria, such as Candida.
This goes exactly against the entire point of doing a cleanse!
So, even if you want to go right back to eating steaks after your cleanse, I would advise you cut it out for this period.
Use an Herbal Cleansing Tea
As I mentioned, I would advise against using anything to cleanse your body that is not 100% natural and organic.
It is easy to get sucked up into scams, and I know that we have all seen them.
“Lose 30 pounds in one month with this all natural miracle cleanse.”
After you read the label, however, you realize it is full of stuff that you do not want near your body.
It is always important to do your research with anything that you put into your body. There are great all natural herbal teas that are great for naturally cleansing your body.
Our favorite is dandelion root tea, which acts as a cleansing tea and a diuretic.
With that being said, it is important to mention that while taking a cleansing herbal tea that you increase your water intake. Being a raving coffee addict, I know that for every cup of coffee I drink I should drink an additional cup of water to match.
This applies here as well, if you drink 8 oz. of the cleansing tea, you should add another 8 oz. to your water intake for the day. This will ensure that you do not unintentionally dehydrate yourself and run into conflict with your own goals.
There are also herbal tea blends that can help with other specific cleanses, such as liver or kidney cleanses.
Drinking herbal tea can aid in digestion because of various enzymes and antioxidants found in teas.
Caffeine can also be beneficial for this reason, and also will provide us coffeeholics a great way to limit our coffee intake.
But we all know how hard that is to put into practice.
Do your research on the brands before your decide to buy!
Consume as Many Vegetables as You Can Fit in Your Day
Do you know those ads you see on random websites that say;
“You have 30 lbs of excess junk in your colon! Here’s how to get rid of it!”
It’s generally a cheap sales company, but it is an important issue. I used to think that this was completely untrue and that this company was just trying to make me buy their products.
After I began eating organic foods only, I did notice that my trips to the bathroom became much more frequent. Additionally, I lost about 30-40 lbs within a month of going organic.
When we initially made this diet change we also ate a large amount of vegetables.
Vegetables are high in fiber so your digestive system gets a nice cleaning. This helps your intestinal walls, your stomach, your microbiome, your colon, and your overall health.
Vegetables Aid Digestion!
Your digestion is vital to your health, and vegetables are a large aspect of having healthy digestion. Aside from being high in fiber, most vegetables are also mostly water.
So you’re basically just eating water, nutrients, and fiber!
This will aid your cleanse by further removing obstructions in your digestive tract and hydrating you beyond the water that you’re drinking.
Increasing the amount of vegetables that you consume on a daily basis will also provide the benefit of increasing your nutrient intake.
Broccoli has high levels of fiber, calcium, potassium, and vitamin C
Kale has high levels of Vitamins K, D, E, and calcium.
There are tons of health benefits to increasing your vegetables, it is extremely difficult to eat veggies in excess.
It is important to mention that there are two types of fiber;
Water Soluble and Water Insoluble
Water Soluble simply means that the fiber combines with liquids to make a gel-like mixture. This is great for constipation as it provides a gentle way to work out what needs to be worked out.
Water insoluble is the opposite, it does not dissolve in water. This will help clear obstructions, as it is not digested but rather pushed through the intestines and excreted.

Eat Fermented Products
We have mentioned fermented products quite a few times on our blog.
In fact, we have an article on why you should consume kombucha every single day.
Fermented foods are great for your digestive tract which means it is great for cleansing your body of unwanted substances.
Let me use Kombucha as an example. A simplified version of the fermentation process would be:
- Black tea is made normally and allowed to cool down to room temperature.
- Sugar is added.
- Bacteria is added
- The bacteria begins to consume the sugar in the tea and colonize different types of beneficial bacteria and yeasts.
- The bacteria break down the sugar into smaller sugar molecules, which are then fed to the yeasts.
- The yeasts consume the sugar and create alcohol.
- The alcohol is then consumed and converted into beneficial acids.
After this process, the tea you started with is full of beneficial bacteria, nutrients, and acids.
Drinking small amounts of this every day will greatly help your body maintain a healthy microbiome.
There are studies that show increasing flora in the gut equates to better digestion. Having these beneficial bacterias, acids, and enzymes being added consistently means your body will be more efficient at removing waste.
As I mentioned, things may be in your gut that just sit there because your body has not been able to “move it out” yet. It’s gross and I would argue important to clear your intestines out regularly.
Fermented products have also shown to remove certain heavy metals from the bodies, as will has fight off free radicals.
Doing a cleanse is also about the mental aspects of your life as well. Luckily, fermented foods have been proven to help us out there as well!
Studies suggest that upwards of 90% of Serotonin, or the chemical that makes you feel pleasure, can be linked back to our gut!
That means that if your gut isn’t happy you won’t be!
Consuming healthy bacterias through fermented foods also provides the added benefit of balancing the bad bacteria and yeasts that are in your body.
This is a major benefit to a cleanse because a yeast such as Candida can cause many health issues such as sluggishness or mental fogginess. Balancing out harmful yeasts can aid these symptoms and restore your microbiome to homeostasis.
Go for a Walk in the Morning
If you aren’t a morning person, I completely understand.
I’ve been through periods of my life where my day did not start until noon at the earliest. Trying to get me up before then was a risk to your health.
There are several reasons I like taking walks in the morning;
- There is no one around to bug you in the morning
- It’s nice and quiet so you could listen to audiobooks
- You could listen to nature
- There is no one around to bug you in the morning
- You get your blood pumping
- Your immune system gets a nice boost for the day
- You will feel an increase in mood and energy
- There is no one around to bug you in the morning
Walking is good for cleansing for multiple reasons as well;
- It will increase your heart rate. This will result in more blood being circulated which can aid digestion. If your body us under gentle exercise it will spike your metabolism to burn off more energy to meet the demand.
- It will flush more water out of your body. This will help flush salt out of you, which can help you lose any water weight that you might be holding on to.
- It helps clear your mind. Again, cleansing is not limited to cleansing your body. Your mind can be just as big a source of toxin, so ensure that you focus on your mental health as well.
Of course, you can run if you would like. I love running and think it is a great way to lose weight, to clear your mind, and improve your overall health.
What I would suggest is to add the walk rather than substitute anything else.
Get up 30 minutes or an hour early and go for a walk. Then go for your run or lift your weights later on.
Not only will it provide a myriad of benefits for your body, but it will set your day off the right way.
Doing a cleanse is a great way to improve your health.
It could aid in inflammation, the immune system, digestion, and many other areas of your body.
